Halloween

Still Life with pumpkin as seen at the Romberg Tiburon Center, formerly the Naval Net Depot. An interesting place to visit.

Back on the Boardwalk

This cat ran back and for the on the water-pipe as we walked along the Boardwalk. Looked like a tough hombre to me. I was mesmerized by those yellow eyes.

Forgive Me ................

Forgive me for briefly straying from my Greenbrae Boardwalk series of pictures. However, I just completed my latest creation, and wanted to present it to you posthaste. So here, without further fanfare, is "The Golfer".

San Quentin

View of San Quentin from the Greenbrae Boardwalk.

And by the way ~ do you know what the abbreviation "SQQ" stands for? The answer is "San Quentin Quail". These are underage girls that will land naughty guys in San Quentin. Which proves that it's never too late to add to your knowledge.

Starlings

Here's a couple of Starlings checking things out on the Boardwalk from a lofty position. There's quite a bit of activity for them to observe.

Ramshackle

How often do you have the opportunity to use the word "ramshackle"? Well, this little structure sure fits the description. I found it along the Greenbrae Boardwalk, where it adds mystery to the romantic community.

This is NOT the way to the FERRY

Each house on the Greenbrae Boardwalk has a water meter. These meters are protected by metal boxes. The boxes were recently creatively decorated. Here's a picture of the first meter, advising strangers that the Boardwalk is NOT the way to the Ferry! It's not likely that anyone would make that mistake, but the advice is kinda fun anyway. And indicative of the mood and personality of the residents.

Greenbrae Boardwalk Again

Mailboxes at the entrance of the Boardwalk. The Boardwalk is very long and no letter-carrier could be expected to walk out there. Residents use handcarts to lug whatever needs to be lugged, back and forth. As lovely and independent the place is, it's not a great place to live when it rains!

"Lug" is a fun word! Sure beats "carry"! And you culture-vultures will be pleased to learn that Lug (Tomislavgrad), is also a Croatian village in Herzegovina.

Greenbrae Boardwalk

This morning Bob H and I walked along the Greenbrae Boardwalk. There was a lot to see, and I'm afraid that, for the next few days, I'll bombard you with pictures I took there.

Small Business

Young man selling goodies along the Huangpu River in Shanghai. This couldn't be very lucrative. I took this picture on my third and last trip, back to what had my hometown during the Forties.

Goose

Here is the opening of the 2012 Halloween Squash Tomfoolery Season. Sparing no expense I paid 89 Cents for today's entry.

Three of my friends enlightened me on yesterday's duck. It was a Northern Pintail. How could I have failed to identify it?

Once again your favorite birder/photographer doesn't have a clue as to what this duck is called. I am sure that some of my wise friends will take one look and say "why, of course, this is an adult female Klunkerduck. You shoulda known that"! But all I know is that I saw it, and a male, at the Ponds last Saturday. So there!

Moth

This gal/guy has been sitting on the wall outside my apartment for the last couple of days. My Audubon Insect Guide provided no help in identifying the critter.

What caught my eye is that the upper part of the moth looks exactly like the head of a rabbit. Or am I seeing things again?

Surprise!

On the lid it said "SPOON INSIDE", but what I found instead, was the likeness of a moose (with a little help on my part). A Raspberry Moose, to be exact.

Sider Web

Last night's fog brought out hundred's of spider webs at the Ponds. And once again I am puzzled. Where were the spiders all year long? And what do they eat? I never see any insects in the webs. I don't see the spiders either, but I guess they're lurking nearby. It's all very mysterious, but the spider webs are real works of art.

Art Deco Revisited

Rumors have it that I have been named Vice-President of Merchandising by the Coca-Cola Company. This is not true. I have, however, become enamored with the company's new 8.5 Fl Oz, screw-top, aluminum bottle. I think it was first introduced at the Olympic Games in London. I discovered it in the Legion and de Young Museum restaurants. Googling I found that Jean-Paul Gautier has created a "tattoo" Coke bottle along similar lines. I went to great expense ($2.50 per bottle) to obtain models to photograph. Live models are beyond my budget.

Important Lesson

This is an excerpt from the Official Pelican Flight Manual. It can be found in the Chapter entitled "Safe Landing".

"When landing on a body of water, slow down the speed of your flight by raising your wings. Next lower your feet until they touch the water, drag along in the water until you have come to a complete stop. Take a deep breath, then follow instructions from your flight leader. Be sure to study attached picture to see how the various landing positions are executed. If you follow these instructions you will come to no harm".

Sunset

Once again, yesterday, my kitchen window provided all the drama I could handle. Quick action is always called for. Within minutes the clouds turn gray.

Meanwhile Back at the Ponds .............

Slowly but surely more birds are appearing. This couple showed up yesterday and my best guess is that they were Northern Shovelers. The bottom line is, I remain a humble photographer, not a certified birder.

Beware of what lurketh in my bathtub! Fear not, 'tis only my washcloth! Time to make appointment with a shrink?

3-1/2 Weeks to go

Halloween is still three-and-a-half weeks away but pumpkins and squash are already popping up everywhere. I took this picture in front of the Mollie Stone's market in the Bon Air Shopping Center in Greenbrae this morning.

Danika

So here, as threatened, is a picture of my other granddaughter, thirteen-year-old Danika. She lives in Lancaster, PA with her parents, Judi (my daughter) and Marc (you guessed correctly), my son-in-law. By no means a prize-winning shot, except for the fact that Danika posed for me on Skype, some 2,800 miles away. I took the picture with my camera, without a flash. There's a way of taking pictures using Skype, but a senior moment prevented me from remembering how to do it!

The Stairs at the MOMA

I just love the stairs the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art! Picture taken last Tuesday. So simple and yet so striking!

Bee at the Ponds

Haven't had a bee picture in a while. They've been a little scarce.

Kelsey

Sometimes I am overcome by my own modesty. To be not only a great photographer, but also the grandfather of a beautiful woman, is almost too much for one guy to handle.

Stay tuned for a picture of Danika, my other granddaughter.

It's great to have a captive audience!

Multi-talented Kid

Here's a pillow created by Lucy Bodle, my friend Janet Bodle's granddaughter. But Lucy is not only a talented artist. At the September Tamalpa Running Club track meet, she turned in the best performance in the 100 meter kids age-graded race. Who knows where she will excel next.

Mystery

Yesterday Bob H and I visited the de Young Museum in San Francisco. We parked on Cabrillo Street and talked about the architecture of the two houses across the street - typical San Francisco. That's when we noticed something strange. One house was leaning to the left, the other to the right! Look at the two doorways. And the space between the two houses - getting wider toward the top! Draw your own conclusions as to what has taken place here, and what may yet take place. The only thought that came to our minds was hmmmm?
